Granite Countertop Colors: Popular Choices for NJ Kitchens

Choosing a granite color is the most personal decision in a kitchen remodel. Cabinets come in predictable options. Appliances are stainless or panel-ready. Backsplash has trends. But granite — granite is a one-of-a-kind natural stone where every single slab is different from every other slab that has ever existed or ever will exist.

That uniqueness is both the appeal and the challenge. With hundreds of granite color names, varying dramatically from slab to slab even within the same quarry lot, choosing the right color for your kitchen requires understanding color families, veining patterns, how colors interact with cabinets and lighting, and what the NJ market actually prefers.

At Custom Kitchens by Lopez, we have been installing granite countertops in New Jersey kitchens since 2005. We have handled every color on this list and can tell you not just what they look like in a showroom — but what they look like after five years of daily use in a real kitchen. This guide covers every major granite color family with honest NJ pricing, cabinet pairing recommendations, and practical maintenance considerations.

For detailed pricing information by grade and kitchen size, see our granite countertop cost guide.

What this guide covers:

  • Every major granite color family with popular variety names

  • NJ popularity rankings and pricing by color

  • Cabinet and backsplash pairing recommendations

  • Veining patterns and what to look for when selecting a slab

  • Maintenance and stain resistance by color

  • How to shop for granite slabs at NJ stone yards

White and Cream Granites

White granite is the number-one choice in NJ kitchens and has been for the past decade. It delivers the bright, open, airy feeling that dominates kitchen design trends without the maintenance concerns of white marble.

White Ice Granite

Appearance: Crisp white background with subtle gray and silver veining. Minimal movement — clean and consistent.
NJ price range: $55 to $85 per square foot installed
NJ popularity: Top 3 most requested

White Ice is the closest granite gets to the white-marble look that many homeowners want but are afraid to maintain. The veining is gentle and consistent, avoiding the dramatic swoops of marble while still providing visual interest. It pairs perfectly with white, gray, and navy cabinets.

Cabinet pairing: White shaker cabinets for a seamless bright kitchen. Navy or charcoal cabinets for high contrast. Light wood tones for warmth.

Alaska White Granite

Appearance: White to off-white background with gray, beige, and occasional garnet-red mineral flecks. More movement than White Ice.
NJ price range: $50 to $80 per square foot installed
NJ popularity: Top 5 most requested

Alaska White has more visual depth than White Ice — the scattered mineral deposits create a granite that looks alive without being busy. The warm undertones (beige and occasional pink-red flecks) make it especially compatible with warm-toned kitchens.

Cabinet pairing: Cream or antique white cabinets for a warm, traditional look. Espresso or walnut cabinets for elegant contrast. Gray cabinets for a cool, modern feel.

Colonial White Granite

Appearance: Light gray-white background with gold, burgundy, and dark gray mineral veins. Medium movement.
NJ price range: $45 to $70 per square foot installed
NJ popularity: Top 5 most requested

Colonial White is the workhorse of NJ granite. It is affordable, widely available, attractive, and pairs with almost anything. The warm gold and burgundy mineral flecks add character without overwhelming the design. It hides minor stains and water marks better than purer white granites.

Cabinet pairing: White, cream, medium brown, or cherry cabinets. Works with virtually every cabinet color except very dark charcoal, where the contrast can feel disconnected.

River White Granite

Appearance: White background with dramatic gray and burgundy veining in flowing, river-like patterns. High movement.
NJ price range: $60 to $90 per square foot installed

River White delivers the marble-like drama that many homeowners seek. The veining patterns flow across the slab in sweeping lines, creating a countertop that looks like a natural landscape. This is a statement granite — it should be the visual star of the kitchen, with simpler cabinets and backsplash playing supporting roles.

Cabinet pairing: White or light gray cabinets. Let the granite be the focal point.

Bianco Romano Granite

Appearance: Soft white with light gray and taupe veining. Gentle, subtle movement.
NJ price range: $55 to $85 per square foot installed

Bianco Romano is the quiet elegance option. The veining is subtle enough to read as almost solid from a distance, but reveals beautiful detail up close. It is particularly popular in transitional NJ kitchens where the design goal is "elevated but not loud."

Cabinet pairing: White, dove gray, sage green, or light blue cabinets. The understated stone lets painted cabinet colors shine.

Black Granites

Black granite creates drama, anchors a kitchen visually, and hides daily wear better than any other color family.

Absolute Black Granite

Appearance: Solid, uniform black with virtually no visible mineral variation. The purest black natural stone available.
NJ price range: $50 to $80 per square foot installed
NJ popularity: Top 10 most requested

Absolute Black (also called Premium Black or Nero Assoluto) is the gold standard for homeowners who want an uninterrupted dark surface. In a honed finish, it reads as matte charcoal — sophisticated and modern. In a polished finish, it becomes a reflective, mirror-like surface that amplifies kitchen light.

Cabinet pairing: White cabinets for the classic tuxedo kitchen. Light wood for Scandinavian contrast. Avoid dark cabinets — the kitchen will feel like a cave.

Maintenance note: Polished Absolute Black shows fingerprints, water spots, and smudges more than any other granite. Many NJ homeowners who choose polished Absolute Black switch to a honed or leathered finish within a few years. We recommend leathered Absolute Black for the best combination of drama and daily practicality.

Black Pearl Granite

Appearance: Black background with shimmering silver, green, and gold mineral flecks that catch the light. Medium movement.
NJ price range: $45 to $70 per square foot installed
NJ popularity: Top 10 most requested

Black Pearl is the most popular black granite in NJ because the mineral flecks add visual depth without sacrificing the dark, dramatic base. Under kitchen lighting, the silver and green flecks sparkle subtly — a effect that photographs cannot capture. You need to see this stone in person under overhead light.

Cabinet pairing: White, cream, light gray, or light wood cabinets. Also works with two-tone cabinets (white uppers, dark lowers) where the dark countertop bridges the color transition.

Blue Pearl Granite

Appearance: Dark blue-black background with iridescent blue and silver labradorite mineral crystals. High visual drama.
NJ price range: $60 to $100 per square foot installed

Blue Pearl is not truly "blue" in the way paint is blue. It is a dark stone with embedded mineral crystals that refract light into brilliant blue flashes. The effect is otherworldly — like looking into deep water. It is one of the most visually distinctive natural stones available.

Cabinet pairing: White cabinets for maximum crystal visibility. Avoid busy backsplashes — the stone needs visual breathing room.

Steel Gray Granite

Appearance: Dark charcoal-gray with lighter gray veining and subtle blue undertones. Consistent, low-drama movement.
NJ price range: $55 to $85 per square foot installed

Steel Gray occupies the space between black and gray, offering darkness without the starkness of Absolute Black. The subtle blue undertone makes it feel cooler and more contemporary than warm-toned browns or beiges. It is the top choice for modern and transitional NJ kitchens.

Cabinet pairing: White, light gray, or two-tone cabinets. Steel Gray also works with navy cabinets for a sophisticated monochromatic dark kitchen — but ensure adequate kitchen lighting to prevent the space from feeling closed in.

Brown and Warm Granites

Brown granites bring warmth and richness to a kitchen. They pair naturally with wood cabinetry and traditional NJ home styles.

Tan Brown Granite

Appearance: Dark brown background with tan, black, and occasional white mineral deposits. Medium movement.
NJ price range: $40 to $60 per square foot installed
NJ popularity: Budget-friendly favorite

Tan Brown is one of the most affordable granites available, and its low price does not reflect low quality. It is a dense, durable stone with a warm color profile that suits traditional, transitional, and farmhouse kitchens. The dark brown base hides stains and daily wear exceptionally well.

Cabinet pairing: Honey maple, medium oak, cream, or white cabinets. Tan Brown is the classic pairing for warm-toned wood cabinets that dominate older NJ kitchens.

Baltic Brown Granite

Appearance: Dark chocolate brown background with large, round tan and copper mineral orbicles. Distinctive, high-character movement.
NJ price range: $45 to $70 per square foot installed

Baltic Brown is one of the most recognizable granites because of its unique circular mineral patterns. The large, round orbicles (some 1 to 2 inches in diameter) create a bold, geological pattern that no other stone replicates. Homeowners either love or dislike this pattern — there is rarely a middle opinion.

Cabinet pairing: Medium to light wood cabinets, cream, or antique white. The bold stone pattern needs calm cabinetry as a backdrop.

Giallo Ornamental Granite

Appearance: Warm gold and cream background with brown, gray, and burgundy mineral deposits. Medium to high movement.
NJ price range: $40 to $60 per square foot installed
NJ popularity: Top 10 budget-friendly choice

Giallo Ornamental is the warm counterpart to the cool white granites. Its gold and cream tones bring sunshine into a kitchen, making it popular in NJ homes where the kitchen doesn't receive abundant natural light. It is also one of the most affordable Level 1 granites, making it an excellent choice for budget-conscious remodels that still want natural stone.

Cabinet pairing: Dark cherry, espresso, or medium brown cabinets for a classic warm palette. White cabinets for a brighter look with warm accents. Avoid gray or cool-toned cabinets — the warm and cool clash.

Santa Cecilia Granite

Appearance: Gold, brown, and burgundy with dark garnet and black mineral flecks. High movement, busy pattern.
NJ price range: $40 to $60 per square foot installed

Santa Cecilia is one of the most-installed granites in the United States and has been for decades. Its warm, multi-colored pattern pairs with everything from oak to maple to cherry cabinets. The busy pattern hides crumbs, stains, and daily wear better than almost any other stone.

Maintenance advantage: Santa Cecilia's dense mineral composition resists staining better than many other granites. It requires sealing, but forgetting to seal it for a year is less likely to result in damage than with porous white granites.

Gray Granites

Gray granite bridges the gap between warm and cool kitchens. It is the neutral choice for homeowners who want neither stark white nor dramatic black.

New Caledonia Granite

Appearance: Medium gray background with darker gray and occasional brown veining. Consistent, subtle movement.
NJ price range: $45 to $70 per square foot installed

New Caledonia is the Swiss army knife of granite — it goes with everything. The medium gray base is neutral enough to pair with any cabinet color, any backsplash, and any design style. It is particularly popular in NJ's transitional kitchens where the design goal is timeless rather than trendy.

Cabinet pairing: Literally any cabinet color. White for brightness, dark for drama, wood for warmth, painted for personality.

Luna Pearl Granite

Appearance: Light to medium gray with white and dark gray mineral flecks. Low movement, consistent pattern.
NJ price range: $40 to $60 per square foot installed

Luna Pearl is the affordable gray option. Its consistent, low-drama pattern creates a calm, quiet countertop surface that lets other kitchen elements (a bold backsplash, colorful cabinets, statement lighting) take center stage. It is the "supporting actor" granite — always good, never distracting.

Cabinet pairing: White or cream cabinets for a classic, clean palette. Works well in modern kitchens with flat-panel cabinets.

Azul Platino Granite

Appearance: Cool blue-gray background with white and dark gray veining. Clean, modern movement.
NJ price range: $55 to $80 per square foot installed

Azul Platino has a noticeable cool, blue undertone that distinguishes it from standard grays. It reads as sophisticated and contemporary — a granite for modern NJ kitchens that want natural stone without the traditional warm tones. The veining patterns are elegant without being dramatic.

Cabinet pairing: White, dove gray, or navy cabinets. The cool blue undertone makes it especially striking with navy or slate-blue cabinet colors that have become popular in NJ.

Green Granites

Green granite is the unexpected choice that creates a kitchen unlike anyone else's on the block.

Ubatuba Granite (Verde Ubatuba)

Appearance: Deep dark green-black with gold and bronze mineral flecks that sparkle under light. Low to medium movement.
NJ price range: $40 to $60 per square foot installed
NJ popularity: Budget-friendly favorite

Ubatuba (pronounced "oo-bah-TOO-bah") is a Brazilian granite that appears nearly black in dim light but reveals deep green tones under bright kitchen lighting. The gold mineral flecks add warmth to the dark base. It is one of the most affordable granites available and one of the most durable.

Cabinet pairing: Medium to light wood cabinets (the green-gold tones complement natural wood beautifully), cream, or white. The classic pairing is Ubatuba + maple cabinets — a combination that dominated NJ kitchens in the 2000s and still holds up.

Verde Butterfly Granite

Appearance: Dramatic dark green with large, sweeping veins of lighter green, gold, and brown. Very high movement.
NJ price range: $70 to $120 per square foot installed

Verde Butterfly is a statement stone. The large-scale veining patterns create a countertop that looks like a piece of geological art. Every slab tells a different story. This is not a background stone — it is the centerpiece of the kitchen design.

Cabinet pairing: White or cream cabinets. Simple backsplash. The stone needs visual space to breathe.

Seafoam Green Granite

Appearance: Soft sage to seafoam green background with gray and white veining. Gentle, flowing movement.
NJ price range: $60 to $100 per square foot installed

Seafoam Green is the coastal kitchen granite. Its soft, muted green tones evoke sea glass and ocean air — perfect for NJ Shore homes and beach-influenced kitchens inland. The color is restrained enough to work in non-coastal settings as well, bringing a calming natural element to any kitchen.

Cabinet pairing: White, cream, light gray, or natural wood cabinets. Especially beautiful in coastal and farmhouse kitchens.

Blue and Exotic Granites

Blue granites are rare, expensive, and visually unlike anything else in the stone world. They are the luxury choice for homeowners building a one-of-a-kind kitchen.

Blue Bahia Granite

Appearance: Vivid medium blue with darker blue and gray veining. High movement. No other natural stone looks like this.
NJ price range: $120 to $200+ per square foot installed

Blue Bahia is a rare Brazilian granite that has no visual equal. The blue is genuine, not just a hint — it is a saturated, medium-toned blue that photographs beautifully and looks even better in person. At $120 to $200+ per square foot installed, it is a premium investment. A typical 40-square-foot NJ kitchen countertop in Blue Bahia runs $4,800 to $8,000+ for stone and installation.

Where it makes sense: High-end NJ kitchens in Rumson, Colts Neck, Deal, Holmdel, and Spring Lake where the countertop budget matches the home value. Blue Bahia in a mid-range neighborhood over-improves the kitchen relative to the home.

Azul Macaubas Granite (Quartzite)

Appearance: Blue-gray background with dramatic white and light blue veining. Often classified as quartzite rather than granite.
NJ price range: $100 to $180 per square foot installed

Azul Macaubas bridges the gap between granite and quartzite. It has the hardness and durability of quartzite with the color profile of an exotic blue granite. The blue is more muted and gray-tinged than Blue Bahia — sophisticated rather than vivid.

Note: Despite being sold under "granite" at many stone yards, Azul Macaubas is technically a quartzite. This is actually an advantage — quartzite is harder and more stain-resistant than true granite. It does not require sealing as frequently.

Van Gogh Granite

Appearance: Swirling patterns of blue, green, gold, brown, and cream in dramatic, painterly sweeps. Every slab looks like an abstract painting.
NJ price range: $150 to $250+ per square foot installed

Van Gogh is the most visually dramatic natural stone available. Named for its resemblance to a Van Gogh painting, each slab features swirling, flowing color patterns that are genuinely one-of-a-kind. No two slabs look even remotely similar. At $150 to $250+ per square foot installed, it is reserved for homeowners who view their kitchen countertop as art.

How to Shop for Granite Slabs in NJ

Shopping for granite in NJ is different from buying most building materials. You are selecting a specific, individual piece of natural stone — not ordering a product from a catalog.

Visit the Stone Yard in Person

Never choose granite from a website photo or a small sample chip. Granite varies dramatically from slab to slab, even within the same color name. A small sample shows 4 square inches of a stone that will cover 30 to 50 square feet of your kitchen. The veining, color variation, and overall character of the slab only become apparent at full scale.

NJ stone yards: Major granite distributors in the NJ area include yards in North Brunswick, Elizabeth, Linden, and Totowa. Most are open to the public for viewing, though purchasing typically goes through your contractor or fabricator.

View Slabs Standing Up

Stone yards store granite slabs vertically in A-frame racks. When you find a color you like, ask the yard to stand the full slab upright so you can see the entire surface. Walk back 10 feet and evaluate the overall pattern. Then get close and examine specific areas for pitting, fissures, and color consistency.

Select Your Specific Slab

When you choose a granite color, you are selecting one specific slab (or two for larger kitchens). The fabricator will cut your countertop from that exact piece of stone. Make sure you and your contractor agree on the specific slab — mark it, photograph it, and confirm it is reserved. Stone yards sell first-come-first-served.

Check for Natural Fissures

All natural granite has fissures — hairline cracks in the stone that are part of its geological formation. Small fissures are normal and do not affect durability. Large fissures (visible cracks you can feel with a fingernail) can be structural weak points. Avoid slabs with large fissures running through areas that will become countertop edges or cutout corners (sink, cooktop).

Consider the Finish

  • Polished: High-gloss, reflective surface. Shows fingerprints and water spots on dark colors. Best for dramatic stones where you want maximum color depth and shine.
  • Honed: Matte, smooth surface. Hides daily wear better. Slightly reduces color intensity. Best for light-colored granites and busy households.
  • Leathered: Textured, low-sheen surface with a tactile feel. Hides wear best of all finishes. Creates a casual, organic look. Our most-recommended finish for NJ families with kids.
